Area Youth Group Weekend Away

For years there has been a very successful weekend away for the 11-14’s age group… but not for older 14-18’s age group. This is mainly because individual groups organise their own weekends. The 11-14’s weekends normally involved 5 different church groups and they are always a real encouragement as there is a ‘buzz’ when 90 young people come together.

Some churches where the 14-18’s group is run by volunteers or where the youthworker has moved on may struggle to organise a weekend like this which is why we thought this would be a great idea.

On Saturday 25th October we ventured off the Gilwell Park Scout Activity Centre for 2 and a half days. We packed up the cars with a massive amount of food, some PA kit, musical instruments, Bibles, sports kit, Chris Evans (our speaker), Sam Corry(our worship leader), 23 young people and a sprinkling of highly talented volunteer youth leaders. And so began our first St Albans Area Weekend Away. It was such a blessing to young people and leaders alike and having 4 different youth groups coming together gave the weekend and real sense of bonding. Chris led us through 3 sessions on the Great Commission and quite superbly engaged all of us with passion and energy and the need for each one of us to go back and be salt and light to our friends and family. Sam led us in music and enabled many young people to really take some time with God and sing out to Him as well as be quiet with Him.

As well as these great times we ate a lot, laughed a lot, got to know new friends and build on existing friendships. It was quite simply an awesome weekend and really went towards part of our plan for the2:67project, which is to build up and encourage local youth groups.

I can’t wait for next year and we have already planned to have another weekend from 30th October - 1st November 2009. Details will be coming out soon so do start thinking about whether you would like to bring your youth group.
